Breast revision is a corrective surgery to resolve unsatisfactory results due to technical or medical complications from a prior breast procedure. A breast revision in Houston is also ideal for any woman who had a successful augmentation, but who desires a further change or to revert to her native breast size. It takes skilled hands to perform revision surgery, and Dr. Lind is a master of this custom procedure.

What is breast revision surgery?

At the Lind Institute of Plastic Surgery in Houston, breast revision surgery (also called a breast exchange) may involve switching from saline to silicone implants, or vice versa. Implants can be re-positioned, made larger, made smaller, or removed, and the breasts restored to their original size. Every breast revision surgery is 100% customized, as the problems that arise vary from person to person.

Do I need revision surgery?

Breast revision surgery addresses mistakes that were made during the initial augmentation or problems with the implants that occurred afterward. Sometimes changes in the breast can occur years after breast implants have been placed. The technical errors and other problems that may arise after primary breast augmentation include the following:

  • Implant rippling and/or folding
  • Implant shifting out of place
  • Asymmetry
  • Capsular contracture
  • “Double bubble” (the implant moving beneath breast crease, creating a double mound)
  • Uneven position
  • Breast implant rupture
  • Saline implant deflation
  • Breasts too large
  • Breasts too small
  • Implants that are over 10 years old

The breast revision procedure

The techniques applied in a custom breast revision in Houston will vary, reflecting the extent of the alterations needed in your case. It can include the re-positioning of nipples and areolae, the removal or exchange of implants, or simply a change of implant size or type. Sometimes work needs to be performed on the capsule surrounding the breast implant. Correction surgeries will typically take from one to four hours to perform. In most cases, the incisions are placed in the same location as your primary surgery to avoid added scarring.

Why should you undergo breast revision surgery in Houston?

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your breasts after breast augmentation surgery, you may choose to undergo a revision. Some of the reasons our patients come to us at the Lind Institute of Plastic Surgery include:

  • The shell on a silicone implant has ruptured
  • The breasts have begun to feel hard
  • A saline implant has ruptured and deflated
  • A patient may be experiencing pain
  • Implants have shifted out of position
  • The edge of the implant shell is visible under the skin
  • The implants are old and need to be replaced
  • The patient is unhappy with her breast size
  • The patient’s skin and tissue have contracted around the implant

What is the recovery time?

The results of the breast revision surgery are usually long-lasting, unless there are dramatic alterations to your figure. It is important to remember that factors like pregnancy, aging, and gravity will change the structure of your breasts. We advise our patients to visit with us yearly to ensure all is well.

Detailed instructions for post-surgical care will be provided to you by Dr. Lind. It is common to experience temporary pain, swelling, stiffness, and bruising as the effects of anesthesia start wearing off.

A compression bra must be worn to reduce swelling and help your tissues settle into their new position. In most cases, a few days of rest are nice to have before you can return to your usual activities. Physically strenuous activities must be avoided until you have thoroughly recovered, which is usually in about six weeks.
