What is a mini tummy tuck?

A mini tummy tuck in Houston is a procedure to improve the cosmetic appearance of the lower abdomen with less extensive surgery than a full tummy tuck. Technically known as a “mini abdominoplasty”, it involves a single incision just above the pubic mound through which loose excess skin is removed to restore a smoother, flatter abdomen.

Who is a good candidate for a mini tummy tuck?

The ideal candidate for a mini tummy tuck in Houston is a person with loose, excess abdominal skin and fat, and lax muscles in the lower abdominal wall that results in an abdomen that bulges out in the area below the belly button. These aesthetic problems are not typically treatable with diet and exercise alone. You may be a good candidate for this procedure if you are in good physical shape and have only this one problem area, or if you have any stretch marks below the belly button, as these are typically removed during the procedure.

What should I expect with mini tummy tuck surgery?

The mini tuck is performed as an outpatient procedure in one of our state-of-the-art operating rooms here at our office. The surgery takes approximately one to two hours. Patients return home the same day.

  • During the procedure, a single incision is made in the pubic area across the lower abdomen beneath the underwear line. The incision is made as low as possible, and can range from only a few inches to the entire width of the lower abdomen, depending on your needs. In a mini abdominoplasty, no incision is created around the belly button.
  • Excess skin and fat below the belly button are removed.
  • The abdominal muscles below the belly button can be tightened if needed, but this is only performed in select patients.
  • Sometimes the belly button is moved to a slightly lower position (two centimeters).
  • Liposuction sometimes may be performed during the tummy tuck to treat other areas for an optimal cosmetic result.

What is recovery like after a mini tummy tuck?

One surgical drains is typically left to drain any fluid accumulation. You will also be given a prescription pain medication.  It’s important to begin walking the night of surgery.

Recovery is more comfortable and faster after a mini tummy tuck than after full abdominoplasty. Discomfort peaks within the first few days, and this is a time when you will likely need assistance walking around the house. Typically by day five, you will start to feel better to walk and move more easily.

Your first follow-up appointment will occur about ten days after your surgery. Your surgical drain will usually be removed at that visit, depending on how much fluid has drained. All sutures are buried and absorbable.

Most patients return to light-duty work in one week after surgery. Do not lift anything heavier than a full milk jug for six weeks, including children. You can expect to return to full activity and exercise in six weeks following tummy tuck surgery.
